Iris Origo’s contribution to 20th-century historiography

Dame Iris Margaret Origo was an English-born biographer and author. She lived in Italy and wrote many international bestsellers. She is best known for her novel War in the Val d’Orcia. She was born in Birdlip, Gloucestershire, the daughter of Lady Sybil Marjorie Cuffe and William Bayard Cutting Jr. She married the Marquis Antonio Origo in 1924.

Iris Origo’s life was complicated and difficult. She and her husband sheltered refugees, partisans, and deserters. They had a young son, Gianni, who died from meningitis. Their marriage was strained after Gianni’s death. The family fled to Montepulciano. The family’s home was seized by the Germans.

Origo’s husband was an energetic and affectionate man. He also had strong nationalist leanings. Origo’s relationship with her husband is not mentioned in her autobiography. He was a decade her senior. Despite her husband’s shrewd estate management, the couple’s relationship was complicated by their varying political views.

Origo was not an active politician. However, she was brought into contact with some aspects of fascism. In her autobiography she keeps a reticent silence about her involvement with fascism.

Tax deduction for business renovation and refurbishment

Expenditure on renovation and refurbishment of business property is a tax deduction. However, it is not a tax deduction for capital expenditure. It can be deducted in full or in part depending on the nature of the expenditure. However, some expenditures may qualify for tax depreciation incentives.

The Energy Policy Act of 2005 allows businesses to claim tax deductions for energy-efficient improvements to their buildings. These improvements have to meet certain standards set by the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air Conditioning Engineers. The standards are published on the Internet. As a result, business owners can claim tax deductions for energy-efficient improvements that reduce heating and cooling costs by 50%.

Businesses can also claim a deduction for R&R costs. However, companies must ensure that their R&R costs qualify. The IRS may argue that repairs are part of a general betterment plan. However, business owners should be aware of the tax pitfalls of renovations.
