Sega Dreamcast
The Dreamcast gaming technology was one of the earliest of its kind. Its development is an important part of the history of the game console industry. Sega began designing electronic games during the late 1960s, and took advantage of the arcade boom of the ’70s to launch two home video game consoles – the SG-1000 and the Master System. Both were released in the early to mid-’80s, and both failed to keep up with Nintendo’s NES. As a result, Sega quickly released a 16-bit successor, the Genesis, two years before Nintendo’s Super NES.
While the Dreamcast may not look like much, it features many of the same technological advances as other video game consoles. It uses 128-bit architecture, a high-speed processor, a powerful graphics chip from NEC, and a 64-channel audio chip from Yamaha. The system also features a large amount of RAM, which is essential for playing games.
GameCube
While the original GameCube was well received upon its release, the device lacked technological innovations that are common in modern gaming. Its dual analog sticks and two memory cards allowed players to store many games at one time. This meant that the user did not have to worry about losing progress or having to transfer data to another system. Instead, they could swap memory cards when one became full.
Though Nintendo hoped to sell 50 million GameCube systems by 2005, sales were less than the expectations. One reason for the poor showing was that the GameCube had a limited number of game titles, which didn’t appeal to even the most devoted Japanese gamers. The console’s light advertising campaign did not attract enough fans to make it a success. Additionally, the console failed to sell as well as expected due to the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11. However, some developers, such as P.J. McNealy, feel differently.
In terms of design, the GameCube was one of the most striking consumer electronics of its generation. The unit is shaped like a cube, but is actually not a cube at all. The back side of the device features a large carry handle. At its launch event, the GameCube was shown in a variety of colours, including electric pink, purple, gold, and silver. Nintendo of America had to decide which colours to make available to consumers.
Face recognition
The Chinese social media giant Tencent recently announced plans to use facial recognition technology in more of its games. The technology can identify people by recognizing their facial features, and can be used to authenticate their identity. Tencent began trialling the feature in its games in late 2018. It plans to add more titles in the future.
As of January 2019, the technology is capable of identifying at least 100 people from a single image. In addition, it can match these faces with databases of millions of faces. However, a recent Newsweek report claimed that the technology incorrectly identified 28 US members of Congress as criminals. The report was published by the US Homeland Security Science and Technology Directorate.
As face recognition becomes more popular as a tool for law enforcement, concerns about privacy are growing. In the United States, the city of San Francisco voted to ban the technology on 6 May 2019. The City Council of Somerville, Massachusetts, passed a law restricting the use of facial recognition technology in public places on 1 July 2021.
Virtual reality
Virtual reality is a new way of playing games that combines virtual and real environments. This technology combines visual and haptic input to create a full immersion experience. Its use has expanded beyond gaming, into physical therapy, medical simulation, military training, and more. This technology is constantly evolving, and there are new applications for it every year.
